River Cities Speedway

River Cities Speedway is the current name for the racetrack at the Grand Forks County Fairgrounds. The Fairgrounds has had a racetrack on the grounds since it moved to this location in 1904. There was also a track at the previous location. The racetrack was originally a 1/2 mile layout set up for harness racing. As automobile racing became more popular, it also began being held at the track. Auto racing became the main racing at the track almost 70 years ago. The track was shortened to 1/4 mile. Several promoters have run the racing program at the track over the years. The current promoter, River Cities Speedway, began operating the track in 1999. They have made some modifications to the track. It is now approximately 3/10 of a mile long. It is a high banked oval track made with river bottom clay. The clay helps provide an outstanding race surface when it is prepared correctly. The track has been voted one of the best dirt tracks in the United States.
